Microblading before and after: real results, healing stages, and what to expect

Chloe Reed

Makeover

Quick answer: Microblading creates semi-permanent, hairlike strokes that fill and define your brows. Results last 18 to 30 months. Brows look darker right after the procedure, fade during weeks one to four, then settle into their final shape. A touch-up at six to eight weeks locks in the result.

What is microblading? Microblading is a semi-permanent brow treatment. A trained artist uses a fine-blade tool to deposit pigment into the upper layers of the skin, creating hairlike strokes that mimic natural brow growth. The result is fuller, more defined eyebrows that last up to 30 months without daily makeup.

This guide draws on published clinical and aesthetic industry data, verified healing timelines from certified practitioners, and our own experience building AI preview tools for brow studios across the UK and US.

What does microblading look like right after the procedure?

The moment you leave the studio, your brows will look bold. Expect them to appear 20 to 25 percent darker and slightly thicker than their final healed result. This is not a mistake. It is exactly how the healing process works.

You will also notice some redness around the treatment area. That is your skin's natural response to the tiny incisions made during the session. It fades within 24 to 48 hours.

Do not judge the outcome at this stage. What you see on day one is not your final result.

The day-by-day microblading healing timeline

The complete healing process takes 25 to 30 days, according to Healthline. Here is what to expect at each stage.

Days 1 to 3: bold and bright

Your brows look their darkest and most defined. Some swelling and redness is normal. The area may feel tender. Avoid getting your brows wet, and skip face wash, sweat, and makeup near the treated area.

Days 4 to 7: itching begins

The itch is real. As the skin heals, it pulls tight. You will also notice the brows beginning to thicken slightly as light scabbing forms. Do not scratch. Do not pick. Picking removes pigment and creates patchy results.

Days 8 to 10: the ghosting phase

This is the stage that catches most people off guard. Your brows may look faded, gray, or patchy. Some strokes may seem to disappear entirely. This is the microblading ghosting phase, and it is completely normal. A thin layer of skin forms over the pigment as part of healing. It will shed on its own.

Days 11 to 21: color returns

The outer layer flakes away and the pigment underneath becomes visible again. Color returns gradually, often softer and more natural than the immediate post-procedure look.

Weeks 4 to 6: final result

By week four, your brows have settled into their healed shape and color. This is when you can genuinely assess the outcome. Expect the final result to be 20 to 40 percent lighter than it looked right after the appointment.

What do healed microblading results actually look like?

Healed microblading looks natural. The hairlike strokes blend with your existing brow hairs to create a fuller, more defined arch. The color is softer than it appeared right after the session.

Results vary based on three factors: your skin type, the artist's technique, and your aftercare routine. Oily skin tends to absorb pigment faster, which can cause faster fading. Dry skin often holds color longer.

Results last 18 to 30 months on average, per Healthline. Most people return for a touch-up every 12 to 18 months to maintain the shape and depth.

How much does microblading cost?

The average microblading cost in the UK and US falls between $300 and $800, according to data compiled by Lavishing Eyebrows. Premium artists in major cities may charge up to $2,000 per session.

Most packages include:

  • An initial consultation
  • The microblading session
  • A perfecting touch-up at six to eight weeks

Annual maintenance touch-ups typically cost less than the initial session. Factor them into your budget when planning.

The global microblading and brow treatment market reached a value of $1.25 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow at 8.3% CAGR through 2033, showing how mainstream this treatment has become.

How to choose the right microblading studio

The result lives on your face for up to two and a half years. Choosing the wrong studio is a costly mistake. Here is what separates excellent studios from average ones.

Training and certification. Look for artists certified by recognized bodies such as the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals (SPCP) or PhiAcademy. These certifications require hands-on training and assessment.

Portfolio consistency. Ask to see healed results, not just fresh ones. Fresh microblading always looks bold. Healed results show the artist's true skill.

Skin assessment. A good artist reviews your skin type, undertone, and natural brow shape before agreeing to any treatment plan.

Sterilization practices. Microblading creates tiny skin incisions. The studio must use single-use blades and follow proper hygiene protocols.

Preview capability. The best studios now offer AI-powered brow previews before any work begins. This lets you see the shape, arch, and depth of your finished brows before the artist makes a single stroke.

The Makeover 5-Point Brow Studio Selector

We built this checklist based on our experience working with brow studios across the UK and US. Use it before booking any microblading appointment.

CriteriaWhat to look forRed flag
1. Artist certificationSPCP, PhiAcademy, or equivalentNo certifications listed
2. PortfolioHealed before-and-after photosOnly fresh results shown
3. Skin consultationPre-treatment skin type assessmentNo consultation offered
4. Hygiene protocolSingle-use blades confirmedReusable tools or vague answers
5. Preview toolAI-powered brow shape preview availableNo visualization before the session

A studio that checks all five boxes gives you the best chance of results you will love. Studios that skip criteria 4 or 5 carry the highest risk of regret.

Can you see microblading results before committing?

Yes. We built Makeover specifically to solve this problem.

Before AI preview tools existed, clients had to trust verbal descriptions, rough sketches, or hope that the artist's portfolio matched their own face. That process failed a lot of people.

With Makeover, a brow studio can show you a photorealistic preview of your finished brows in under 10 seconds. You see the shape, arch, and color on your own face before a single stroke is made.

You say yes only when you love what you see.

Studios using Makeover report clients who book with greater confidence and arrive at appointments knowing exactly what to expect. That reduces last-minute cancellations and first-session anxiety.

Why choose a Makeover-powered studio?

We designed Makeover for studios that take their clients' experience seriously.

Here is what a Makeover-powered brow studio offers that a traditional studio cannot:

  • A photorealistic brow preview on your own face before the session
  • Shape and color approval before any pigment is applied
  • A visual record of the planned outcome for reference at your touch-up

We process client photos in real time and discard them immediately. We store nothing, share nothing, and never use photos for AI training. Your client's privacy is protected.

If you run a brow studio and want to offer this to your clients, see how Makeover works for brow specialists.

We also cover how AI previews work for dental clinics and med spas if you work across multiple treatment areas: before-and-after tools for dental clinics and how med spas use AI previews to close more clients.
